  1. 1842-1900. English composer who wrote
  2. operettas in collaboration with William
  3. Gilbert, including HMS Pinafore 1878, The
  4. Pirates of Penzance 1879, and The Mikado
  5. 1885. Their partnership broke down in 1896.
  6. Sullivan also composed serious instrumental,
  7. choral, and operatic works - for example, the
  8. opera Ivanhoe 1890 - which he valued more
  9. highly than the operettas. Other Gilbert and
  10. Sullivan operettas include Patience (which
  11. ridiculed the Aesthetic movement) 1881, The
  12. Yeomen of the Guard 1888, and The Gondoliers
